Nova Scotia Innovation Mural: Rising Tides

“Making Innovation Visible and Public” - ONSIDE, the Halifax Innovation District, VOLTA, Slate Asset Management, and the Downtown Halifax Business Commission did just that through the Gritty to Pretty Placemaking Program.

Congratulations to the winning muralist John McPartland aka ABSEN who painted his creation to celebrate the innovation and entrepreneurship in Nova Scotia!

John’s idea of a mural that depicts an engineer in thought to showcase the theme “A rising tide lifts all boats,” actually came directly from the innovation & entrepreneurship community in Nova Scotia.

We Turned This…

Into This!

We asked people what does innovation and entrepreneurship in Nova Scotia look like to them?

We heard things like:

“When I think of innovation, I think of renewing and improving things, which is especially important in our ever-changing and adapting society. Innovation is all around us in nature, entrepreneurial businesses, medicine, and more. I think that an entrepreneurs way of thinking revolves around new ideas and opportunities for innovation.”

“Diversity, ideas, makers and maker spaces, prototypes, designs, the whole process from idea through to testing and then implementation.”

“When I think of Nova Scotia, I think of an old historic place. I see innovation in our province as a sort of rebirth: making an old place new again.”

“Consistent effort towards addressing inadequacy head-on can lead to positive impact and change”

“The lightbulb moments developing into new creations for a better future”

“Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity rather than a threat”

We took this feedback, and so much more, and then shared it to artists to visualize these ideas and incorporate it into their creations…
